Matthew O’Callaghan is from Dublin, Ireland and he is doing a PhD in Astronomy at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University. He completed his undergraduate degree in Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin in 2016. Before completing the Part III masters in Mathematics at Cambridge University he worked for Ireland’s national grid in machine learning capacity.
Matthew’s current research is related to classification in astronomy using machine learning and big data. The main data source he will be using is Gaia’s data release 3. His research will be used in collaboration with the PASIPHAE project in Crete, which aims to create a 3D tomographic map of the magnetic field in the Milky Way.
His future aspiration is to continue researching in machine learning and data science applied to astronomy.
